How do I choose the right color for my business?

There is no perfect color or even the right way to choose your brand’s color scheme and it mostly depends on the type of business you are in. It can be a little confusing at first but once you have a grasp on what each color means, it will be easier for you to come up with a decision on what shades you should go with. Let’s try to understand the origin of each color before we comprehend what each color might say about your business.

Every color is made up of at least 3 primary colors that in combination make up the rest on the spectrum. The 3 primary ones are Red, Yellow, and Blue. These primary colors then combine to make secondary colors which are Purple, Green, and Orange.

Here is how the combination works:

  • red + blue = purple
  • blue + yellow = green
  • red + yellow = orange

The next step after this is tertiary colors that are made by mixing equal parts of a primary color and secondary color and are then called two-name colors such as red-purple, yellow-green, or blue-green. White and Black are considered neutral colors that are added to these colors to create tones and hues that increase or decrease the intensity of that shade.

Now that we know how each color is made let’s move on to what they each signify.

What does each color signify?

Black

Black is just the absence of light or color and it signifies power, sophistication, authority, and strength. A business choosing to use black makes it look more formal, prestigious, and elegant and evoke strong feelings. Too much black however can be overwhelming as it also represents some negative aspects such as death, spookiness, and some dark elements.

White

White is the antonym of black and it symbolizes clarity, purity, and youthfulness. Also, it generally conveys a positive meaning and can be used to make space or highlight an aspect but like black too much of it can also be unpleasant. Too much white can make your business seem bland, boring, and isolated. It can also turn out very economical for a business in terms of having the least printing cost.

Red

Red is the color of extremes (negative and positive) and in modern culture represents power, energy, passion, love, danger, and violence. Also, it can alert people of danger but at the same time. Additionally, it can cause excitement, boldness so one should be very careful when handling this color.

Yellow

Like red, yellow is also used to show caution and warning signs but it has much lesser intensity. It commonly denoted youth, happiness, and cheerfulness and can also radiate warm positive energy like the sun. The negative aspect of this can however be that it shows a sign of cowardice, betrayal, madness, and ego.

Blue

Blue, the color of the skies and seas is associated with stability, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, and tranquility. If you want your brand to be taken seriously, blue is the color to go for as it symbolizes maturity and trustworthiness. In other words, it is a color that everyone can see even if they are color blind and the bright wavelengths can really help you attract a lot of people.

Conclusion:

Subtle use of colors is a great way to direct your customers to your products and definitely an important part of promotions for a business. There is no hard and fast rule for color selection but a little research can go a long way for you and make people have a strong opinion on what your business has to offer.
