Reverse Engineer Your Competition
Now that you have picked a profitable niche or at least a niche that has a high enough demand level and has commercial value, the next step is to get a head start.
How do you do this? Don’t start from scratch. That’s the worst thing that you can do.
If you have a niche focus, you shouldn’t say to yourself, “Well, I can come up with something that’s awesome. I’m a genius. I can figure this out.” No, you can’t because a lot of this stuff is counterintuitive.
There are many channels on YouTube that in a million years you wouldn’t imagine would make any money, but they do. On the other hand, there are many channels with a lot of videos with sleek production that don’t make any money and have really miserable viewership.
What’s the problem? The people who put up channel after channel only to fail neglected their competition. I don’t care what your niche is. Chances are somebody has already created videos for that niche. Your job now is to look for those people and figure out what they’re doing right.
Reverse engineer them because this will give you a tremendous head start. When you blog about the same stuff they’re blogging about, this means that you avoid wasting time coming up with something that nobody wants to watch. Build your channel on stuff that’s already successful.
Buy Social Proof
I can’t emphasize this enough. When you start anything new, whether it’s a club, a restaurant, or anything that requires people to show up, you’re going to have a chicken-or-egg problem. People are not going to go into your restaurant because there’s nobody there. There’s nobody there because people don’t know if the food is any good. Do you see how this works? So, you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.
The good news is you can easily sidestep this by buying social proof. Tie Your Video into Your Other Online Presence
You cannot look at your YouTube video as something that you do on the side. You can’t look at it as something that you do in isolation. Instead, it has to be tied into the overall brand-building activities you engage in day after day.
This is why it’s really important to post and repost your video links on you Twitter, Pinterest, your Instagram, and all your other social media accounts. You should also blog. You should also engage other bloggers to mention your brand. Whatever you do, make sure that your YouTube channel is closely woven into your other efforts at building up your online visibility.

Now is not the time to just take random shots at videos and expect to make money. That’s not going to happen. It may have worked five years ago; it’s not going to work today.
